New Zealand has some of the most extraordinary ocean sailing waters in the world. Fiordland. The Marlborough Sounds. Foveaux Strait. The open Pacific beyond East Cape. For anyone who wants to experience these waters properly — not from a cruise ship deck, but from the helm of an offshore sailing yacht — the question is: where do you go?

Ocean expeditions in New Zealand have historically been run by a small number of operators, most of them based in Auckland or operating in the Hauraki Gulf and northward. The South Island — where the most dramatic sailing is — has been largely underserved. Until now.

A genuine ocean expedition is different from a cruise or a charter. You're not a passenger — you're crew. You take watches. You helm the yacht through open water. You navigate. You anchor in bays with no roads and no other boats. The sea miles you log count toward internationally recognised offshore sailing qualifications.

The vessel matters too. Ocean expeditions require boats built for the open sea — proper offshore passage makers with the range, stability, and safety equipment to go further and stay longer than a day charter boat ever could.

Southern Passages Expeditions is Canterbury's only offshore sailing operation, specialising in ocean expeditions and skippered sailing passages along the South Island coastline and beyond. We operate from Lyttelton Harbour — 12 kilometres from Christchurch city centre — aboard a 65ft offshore performance yacht built for exactly this kind of sailing.

Our ocean expedition programme covers four destinations, each offering a completely different experience of New Zealand's coastline from the sea:

Marlborough Sounds Passage — Sail north through Cook Strait to the remote anchorages of Queen Charlotte and Pelorus Sound. 5–7 days, from $4,000 per person.

Stewart Island Voyage — Cross Foveaux Strait to Rakiura — 85% national park, kiwi on the beaches, one of the most remote coastlines in New Zealand. From $6,500 per person.

Fiordland Expedition — Sail deep into Doubtful Sound, Dusky Sound and beyond — UNESCO World Heritage wilderness accessible only from the sea. From $6,500 per person.

Lyttelton Harbour Sail — A half-day introduction to offshore sailing aboard a 65ft ocean yacht. Perfect for cruise ship passengers or anyone wanting a taste of the Southern Ocean. From $425 per person.

No — and this is the question we get asked most often. Every ocean expedition Southern Passages runs is skippered by a commercially qualified offshore skipper. You don't need to know how to sail to join. What you do need is a sense of adventure and a willingness to get involved.

That said, every nautical mile you log on a Southern Passages ocean expedition counts toward internationally recognised RYA Yachtmaster offshore qualifications. Many of our passengers arrive with no sailing experience and leave with a logbook full of sea miles and a genuine taste for offshore sailing.

A sailing course teaches you theory and skills in a structured environment. An ocean expedition puts those skills — or the beginnings of them — to work in the real world. The two complement each other perfectly: many people do a Competent Crew or Day Skipper course first, then join an ocean expedition to build their sea miles and put theory into practice.

Southern Passages offers both — RYA offshore training courses for adults who want to build toward a qualification, and ocean expeditions for anyone who simply wants to go further.

The Southern Passages expedition season runs from October through to April, aligning with the New Zealand summer sailing season. The Marlborough Sounds is best in the shoulder months — March and April are outstanding. Stewart Island and Fiordland are year-round destinations but summer offers the longest days and the most settled weather windows.

Our cruise ship shore excursion programme runs through the Lyttelton cruise season from October to April — typically 36 or more ship calls per season, with AM and PM sailings available on each ship day.

Lyttelton is one of New Zealand's most historic ports — a volcanic harbour carved into the Banks Peninsula, 12 kilometres from Christchurch city centre through the Lyttelton Tunnel. It's where Antarctic expeditions have departed from for over a century, and it's the natural base for anyone wanting to sail south.

The Heads — the narrow entrance to Lyttelton Harbour — mark the transition from sheltered water to the open Pacific. Beyond them, the Southern Alps rise on the horizon and the ocean opens up. It's one of the great sailing departures in New Zealand, and it's the start of every Southern Passages ocean expedition.
